Hiking in Africa
Russell Tours has developed a number of great hikes and satisfying adventures over the last 40 years. We are now introducing our most exciting hiking adventure yet – Hiking in Africa. This dramatic continent offers some of the most wide-ranging hikes. We offer an environment of lush floral beauty with some of the rarest plants, animals, birds and interesting mountainous settings anywhere in the world. Don’t miss this great opportunity to experience this wonderful hiking trip.
We combine the best of Africa with first class accommodations and transfers intertwined with real hiking so that you can have a personal connection with the African flora and fauna. All transportation to and from each venue, and to and from the airport are included. All meals, fees and gratuities are also taken care of. So you can concentrate on enjoying the experience you came for. You simply show up, take out your hiking poles and are off to enjoy lush equatorial forests, some of which are thousands of years old. One of the best parts about coming to this area of Africa is the low humidity and heat. You can enjoy high altitude hiking and see some of the most amazing sites in the world.
Join us for a hiking adventure in beautiful and exotic Africa.
We have chosen Rwanda in East Africa as our base. Rwanda is one of the safest and cleanest countries in all of Africa with a people who are welcoming, curious and open. The capital, Kigali, is almost 5,000 feet above sea level – and some of the hikes go up from there. The temperature is between 62 and 85 degrees every day with low humidity during the dry season. Rwanda offers some of the most diverse wildlife attractions that are near to each other, so you can enjoy what you came to see without spending excessive time riding between destinations. Great venues combined with classic accommodations will make this a once-in-a-lifetime event. We are planning on going in the fall time (in the U.S) when the weather is optimum, and it is uncrowded. Each group will be limited to just 10 people who want to hike and who are interested in learning about the natural beauty of this area of the world.

Russell Tours African Hiking Adventure Plan
Day 1 Arrive in Kigali, Rwanda, Africa
We pick you up at the airport when your flight arrives and transition you to Africa by beginning your stay at a 5-star hotel in the center of the modern capital city of Kigali, Rwanda.
Day 2 Kigali-Uganda Nature Walk
Breakfast catered at the world renowned Inema Arts Center by a world class master chef. After a leisurely morning, we travel by custom Safari vehicles on our scenic journey to the north and arrive at Lake Mulehe overlooking the Muhavura Volcano in Virunga National Forest. In the afternoon you have the opportunity to go on a 2 hour round trip leg stretching hike from the lodge to the lake below. This is a walk through rich forest lands and cultivated farms – or you can enjoy some time viewing the volcanoes from the tree top vantage point of the hotel.
Day 3 Uganda Lake Mulehe Gorilla Lodge
The next morning, we leave the mountain lodge and its spectacular lake views, to take a short drive and trek within the protected forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. There our professional trackers bring you to find the famous mountain gorillas in their own habitat. This is also one of the very few and best places to see other primates and abundant rare birds and also one of the least crowded venues in all of Africa.
Day 4 Rwanda-Gisenyi-Kibuye Bird and primate adventure with Naturalist
Hiking at dawn we will go up the Muhavura Volcano on the Uganda side to spot primates, birds and even large forest mammals like buffaloes and Elephants. If there is time, at the top of the volcano, there is a crater lake with beautiful clear waters. We will have along a renowned naturalist to enrich your experience within these magnificent surroundings.
After an exhilarating morning of nature watching on the Muhavura Volcano, we board a 50 foot houseboat to cruise down Lake Kivu to Cormoran Lodge in Kibuye Rwanda.
Day 5 / Day 6 Nyungwe Forest
Over the next few days we will explore the Nyungwe Forest and its 700 year old trees.
• Canopy Walk. Take a stunning canopy walk and hike in the forest of ancient trees.
• Chimpanzee Trek. A naturalist will guide us to a magnificent waterfall, looking to spot many chimpanzees and birds along the way.
• Helicopter over Safari Park. In the late afternoon we take a Helicopter from the Southern District on an exhilarating trip across Rwanda, ending with a flyover of Akagera Safari Park looking for the big 5 animals then land at Akagera Game Lodge at sunset.
Day 7 Akagera Park Karenge Tent Camp, in the north of the park
In the morning, our team guides you into the lower area of park, looking for Rhinoceros and big cats: Lions and Leopards. Mid-day we board a small boat to ride along a lake within the park to spot Hippos, Elephants, Crocodiles and a wide variety of birds who congregate on this lake from all over the continent. After lunch we will hike up a nearby mountain overlooking the park for a 5k walkabout, then continue to the northern planes for a night safari, then make our way to the north for glamping at the thrilling Karenge tented lodge.
Day 8 Akagera Park – Kigali Departure
This day, still in Akagera, we get up early for a pre-dawn drive out to the north plains area looking for Giraffe, Lion, Zebra, Water Buffalo and Hyena. By the end of the day we arrive back in Kigali before 5:00 pm. Guests with flights home that evening are taken to the airport and those wishing to leave the next day can stay the night in Kigali.
