We enjoyed the variety of lodging from high-end hotels to very basic small hotels to mountain huts. The amount of hiking each day was just right, although there were a few days when we “cheated” and took a bus for part of the hike. It was great to have that option. All of the places where we lodged were ready to receive us; the accommodations were excellent and food generally good. They were able to deal with Karen’s vegetarian preference. We were very satisfied with the self-guiding process—we could hike at our own pace, and had a shower, dinner and bed waiting for us at the day’s end. We used Wikilocs, Google Map apps, and altimeter apps. We also used the Classic Walkers Haute Route book that we had loaded into Kindle. We would certainly do this type of trip again.
Russell Tours Hike Review Posted On Friday 11th October 2019 Hiking in the Alps of Europe
Story location: Europaweg between Europahutte and Zermatt, Switzerland
There was a full moon on the night we stayed in the Europahutte. We got up at 3:00 AM and walked to the suspension bridge where Jay took photos of Karen on the bridge in the moon light. Then we hiked a bit in the dark (with headlamps) and stopped for breakfast along the trail. We started resumed hiking at dawn and saw the first light shining on the Matterhorn. Just one of many stunning sights along our route.
